Sweet and Sour Chicken – Restaurant Style

Restaurant style sweet and sour chicken. You can also make this with pork or shrimp. This takes some time in preparation but you can also use frozen chicken nuggets or popcorn chicken instead of frying your own to make it go quicker.

What you’ll need:
2 carrots, sliced paper thin
1 green pepper, rough chopped
1/2 onion, rough chopped
8oz can of pineapple chunks
1-1/2 lbs chicken breasts cut into 1″ pieces

For the batter:
1/3 cup AP flour
1/3 cup cornstarch
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp soy sauce
1/2 cup water

For the sauce:
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
3 Tbsp white vinegar
1 Tbsp ketchup
1 tsp soy sauce
1/4 tsp red food coloring (optional)
3 Tbsp cornstarch

To prepare the chicken: Combine batter ingredients in a large bowl. Add chicken pieces to batter and stir to coat. Fry in 350* vegetable or peanut oil for 5-6 minutes or until golden brown and chicken is cooked thoroughly. Drain on paper towels and set aside.

To prepare the sauce: Stir all ingredients together and set aside.

In a large skillet or wok, heat 2-3 Tbsp oil over medium-high heat. Add carrots, green pepper and onion. Stir fry for 3-4 minutes until just done. Do not brown. Add the sauce mixture and pineapple. Bring just to a boil to thicken. Add chicken pieces and stir to coat. Serve over white or fried rice and enjoy!

***if you use frozen chicken nuggets or popcorn chicken, precook before adding to the cooked sauce. .

  1. More American food.

Learn to use a knife before you injure yourself. My 5-year-old has better knife skills.

I hope you don't think there is anything remotely Chinese about this!

Your pan is painfully too small. Buy a wok. They are cheap.

Serve that crap in China and they'll shoot you!

  2. Thanks a lot , I’ve just made it , it was really amaaaaaaaazing .
Don u have healthy recipe without corn starch or flour ?? For example by using almond flour or by using butter instead of oil to fry with .

  6. Looks terrific! It looks like even a mildly retarded amateur chef like me could do it. Thanks a million!

  7. It creates me pain when seing you cutting on a stone surface. For the saftey of cutting, and the preservation of knife sharpnes, please use hardwood board.

  8. You are amazing chef I will cook like you soon .My son is on Keto diet and I can’t do what I want .i love the way you explain .

  9. All that water isn’t necessary. Equal parts of ketchup, soy sauce, vinegar & sugar. In hot pan, veggies to desired tenderness, move to one end, pour sauce mix, stir a bit, add chicken & stir together. All that water defeats the purpose of frying the chicken till crispy.

  10. For someone isn't Chinese you got this quite close to the original sweet n sour recipe, well done!! originally they would add pineapple for the fruity sweetness so they don't need to put too much sugar, also they added bit of honey too and they would put little more ketchup to have that natural redness instead of using food colouring.
Also they would add about one egg white to thicken the batter so the chicken would come out a bit puffy~ But I suppose you right, becuz many restaurants do use food colouring to cut down the cost!
